UHF Radio FAQs

A dash-mount radio is a single unit that sits in your dash or console — the face, speaker and controls are all in one. A remote-head radio separates the display/controls (which goes in the dash) from the main body (which hides under the seat or in the centre console). Remote-head installs look far cleaner and suit custom dash setups or vehicles with limited space.

Hugely. A UHF antenna needs a proper ground plane to work correctly — that means metal around the antenna base. A roof centre-mount gives the best omnidirectional performance. A bonnet-corner or gutter mount is common and still works well. Mounting on a bullbar or rear canopy sacrifices range in certain directions. We'll recommend the best position for your vehicle and how you'll use it.

SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) measures how well the antenna is matched to the radio. A poor SWR means some of your transmit power is reflected back into the radio instead of being radiated — reducing range and potentially damaging the radio. We check and tune SWR at every installation so your system performs as designed.

Channel 40 is the standard Australian highway UHF channel — used for general road communication and road trains. Channel 18 is for caravan and marine use. We'll explain the common channels when we hand over the radio and can pre-program your preferred channels into memory so you don't need to scroll through all 80.
